Day 3…
KATY
It’s currently Day Three of the home life for me. My company was slightly late to the WFH Out of Office Party that has swept through London. Ryan started on Thursday and hasn’t subsequently gone back to Canary Wharf. I took the more back and forth approach but am now permanently seconded to SE14. As you can see we’re nicely set up for the next chapter of our career paths.
Broadly speaking we are staying sane. For me the biggest challenge seems to be the lack of information regarding how long this will last. My company aren’t due to unlock the front door to the office until April but equally no-one is expecting things to stay aligned to any plans made in advance. As such I do feel slightly suspended and uncertain what is going to happen.
If this all sounds a bit of a downer it might be because I’ve just come back from our local big supermarket. Or at least what I thought was our local supermarket. It was in truth quite a depressing experience. There wasn’t much of anything on the shelves on any aisle. My hopes of making a few freezer friendly bakes had to rapidly evolve to the reality of people hoarding supplies. Ryan and I will be enjoying an updated & improved chicken stew (with chicken sausages), fish pie (with pasta cheese sauce) & salami pasta (without pasta). I found it quite interesting to see what has been left in the supermarket - mushrooms, Indian sauces, luxury items (a lot of assorted fish stuff in glass ramekins), ice cream & spinach. It also turns out that, even in a crisis, we cannot stomach Brussel sprouts.
We left this supermarket and headed up the road to our local Iceland, with the full expectation of a similar morose selection. In fact we were rewarded with a really good selection of fresh vegetables, friendly prices & very importantly a rich selection of crisps. Our last stop was our very friendly & locally run independent shop opposite our flat (which does a great side line in vinyls). Not to go into the numbers but we will be eating organic spelt pasta with some very intriguing sauces for a while.
*apologies to Stuart because we did not, despite our best efforts, find any flour (normal or not normal) or posh yeast for his bread masterclass next week.
